Tattoo Talk with Amy from Batwings and Lashes

Amy

So what was your first tattoo and how old where you?
My first tattoo is script that says "Family", it's from Travis Barkers, Famous Stars and Straps range and when I saw it I fell in love with it and my mother and brother did too. So we all got it done together on the day of my 17th birthday, I know I should have been 18 but I've had a passion for tattoos since I was 13 so I was allowed... kind of haha

Why did you choose that specific design (because i liked it is a perfectly acceptable answer)
It means a lot to me, we all went through a tough time and it made us grow closer in the end :)

How many tattoos do you have currently? What are they?
I have six tattoos, I have the "Family" one, a purple rose on my wrist, an anchor above that, a pumpkin on the back of my forearm, lettering on my shoulder saying "Cogli L'attimo" It's Italian for seize the day (I'm half Italian so I have the translation right haha) and that's for my favorite Avenged Sevenfold song
and my most recent one is a ship with a heart shaped banner on the back of my upper arm. It's actually so hard to describe them all :P

Do you have a favorite piece? if so what one and why?
This is such a tough question... ok, I'm gonna have to go with my pumpkin! There's no meaning behind it really other than I love Halloween. I got this one done at the Galway Tattoo Convention (ireland) and it won 'Best New School' at the event.

Did you do a lot of research in to your chosen artist/artists?

Yeah with the last two recent ones I have, the rest of them I knew the artists really well so I trusted them a lot!

Are you planning on anymore?

I'd love to be covered from head to toe :P The next one I think will be a camera of some sort, I'm leaning more on a Polaroid camera. I adore photography so it suits!

A silly question as pain is relative but Most painful tattoo?

The ship on the back of my arm above my elbow, I was actually worried what the pain was going to be like before I went in to get it done because I mostly have them on my arms and they weren't too bad but this one sucked a bit I have to say!

General reaction from friends and family about your tattoos/body mods? Are they happy about you having them?

Yeah everyone is all good with them now but when I started getting piercings when I was younger I got into so much trouble. My mam wasn't too bad with them but my dad really didn't like them. My ears are now stretched to 22mm and no one liked me stretching them, any time I went bigger there was always a comment passed about it, I've also gotten comments from friends in regards to my tattoos saying things like "what will you do with them if you get married?" and stuff like that but no one really minds my tattoos and mods now.

Reactions from members of the public about your tattoos/body mods, Good or Bad?
It's a mix of both really, any time I went to the local nightclub people would ask "why would you do that to yourself" and so on but I do get lovely compliments on my tattoos!

Have you tattoos ever hindered anything you wanted to do, interviews, work, etc?

I don't think so, I want to be a tattoo artist so it's a part of the job to have them really! I'm currently studying Art & Design in college to work towards that :)

Do you get asked did it hurt a lot? What do you tell people?

haha yeah I do, not so much lately though! I tell them yeah it does hurt but it's bearable pain.

Do you find people will touch your tattoo (body mods) without asking? If so how do you deal with it?
A lot of people used to stick their fingers through my plugs and it really wrecked my head, one time someone did it and my jewellery got knocked out of my ear! I just try and take a deep breath and just deal with it, I know some people are just curious and if you ask I really don't mind!

Shout out to the artist/artists hear if you want :)

Any parting words?
