Tattoo Talk with Mayra from Maralamode

This week on
Name: Mayra Vasquez

Website: I blog about Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle at my blog http://mayralamode.com/I been Blogging for a few months now, and I really enjoy it.

So what was your first tattoo and how old where you?
I got my first tattoo when I was 15 years old. It was a pop tart + a Peanut = a heart.

Why did you choose that specific design?
I was obviously really young when I got that tattoo. I got that because it symbolized my relationship with my boyfriend of 6 years. I decided to get it cover up because it wasn't professionally done.

How many tattoos do you have currently? What are they?
I currently have 5 tattoos! A faded little moustache on my index finger on my left hand. The word “paradise” on the side of my left hand, and a cross on the side of my right hand. A blue Maneki Neko on my left arm, and a bible verse, (Jeremiah 29:11) on my left shoulder.

Do you have a favourite piece? if so what one and why?
I love all of my tattoos honestly, they mean so much to me. I guess my favourite will have to be the Maneki Neko because it’s a cover up of two previous unprofessional tattoos I got when I was young, and because its my biggest piece.

Did you do a lot of research in to your chosen artist/artists?
I didn't do a lot of research on my artists I just looked at a portfolio of their previous work the day I would get my tattoos. Also I would find them on yelp and they had reviews there. I trust artists because they are professionals for a reason.

Are you planning on any more?
YES! I want to get a sleeve on my left arm!! I just need the money!

A silly question as pain is relative but Most painful tattoo?
The most painful was the moustache on my finger. It’s all faded already but I'm too much of a chicken to get it re-done! Fun fact I was going to get it re-done one day and ended up getting the Maneki Neko on my arm instead.

General reaction from friends and family about your tattoos/body mods? Are they happy about you having them?
Some friends LOVE them, some say I shouldn't get more. My mum didn't like them at first, but now it’s cute how she defends me when she hears other family members talking bad about them.
Reactions from members of the public about your tattoos/body mods, Good or Bad?
Everyone I met loves my tattoos. Specially the younger teens and the man lol

Have your tattoos ever hindered anything you wanted to do, interviews, work, etc?
No, when I started blogging and getting invited to fashion events I felt the need to hide them because I didn't want to lose an opportunity. But then I realized that these people and companies have seen my blog, and my photos where they can obviously see my tattoos. I realized that it was a part of me and my style and if companies wanted to reach out to me and my audience regardless that means they accepted me.

Do you get asked did it hurt a lot? What do you tell people?
Yes I do! I tell them yes and show them what areas hurt more. I know everyone gets sarcastic and mad at these questions, but its just people being curious.

Do you find people will touch your tattoo (body mods) without asking? If so how do you deal with it?
This really bothers me. I dislike it when people think its okay to ouch me just because of my art. It’s just rude and disrespectful. Its not okay to touch someone you don’t know! I also think its not okay to ask “what does it mean.” Because I mean why would you care stranger? You don’t know me! lol

Shout out to the artist/artists hear if you want :)
Thank you @JasonBeavers for designing my Maneki Neko! And for doing an awesome job covering my previous ink!
(I didn't keep track of the other artists)
